作者：乔治·胡拉尼（1913—1984），英国哲学家、历史学家和古典学者。出生于英国曼彻斯顿一个黎巴嫩基督教家庭。曾先后任教于巴勒斯坦的阿拉伯政府学院、密锡根大学近东学系、布法罗大学哲学系以及加州大学洛杉机分校。1978年曾被推举担任全美东方学会会长。其长期从教的布法罗大学在其退休后，还设立了“乔治·胡拉尼专题讲座”，专邀著名学者讲授近东与阿拉伯历史、哲学与文化。因其对哲学、古典文明和航海史等领域的研究，尤其是对中东文化的专业洞察力而受到学界广泛赞誉。 译者：孙博，1991年生于江苏徐州，2022年毕业于南京大学历史学院/中国南海研究协同创新中心，获历史学博士学位。现任中国矿业大学马克思主义学院讲师。研究领域为海上交通史、城市史。
